Jo-dan, Upper Stance or sometimes shortened to Upper is one of the several sword stances first introduced in Way of the Samurai. Historically is is actually called Jōdan-no-kamae.

In Way of the Samurai Series[]

In Way of the Samurai, jōdan-gamae portrays Upper stance. However, in Way of the Samurai 3, Upper stance was changed to Hassō-no-kamae.

Historical Information[]

The Upper Stance, or in Japan, Jōdan-no-kamae, is one of the five kendo sword stances: Jōdan, chūdan, gedan, hassō and waki. All five have appeared throughout all Way of the Samurai game series, with Hassō-no-kamae being interchanged with Jōdan-no-kamae.

Jōdan-no-kamae is called the Kamae of Heaven (天の構え, ten-no-kamae) in Yagyū_Shinkage-ryū and the Kamae of Fire (火の構え, hi-no-kamae) in Shinkage-ryū.
